Class Overview
How the class is related to degree attainment | This class is for first or second year students and will help you develop the academic reading skills necessary to do background reading in English to pursue your research topic. It will also help you to develop your practical English teaching skills and evaluate your and other’s teaching from the perspective of English education research. | ||||
Class goal | In this class students will become familiar with the research literature related to improving the teaching and learning English and use these findings to help with their own research and teaching. | ||||
Objectives | (1) Become familiar with the principles of Second Language Acquisition and different methodologies for language learning and teaching such as Task Based Language Teaching. (2) Become familiar with Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). (3) Improve skills in English academic reading. (4) Become familiar with issues with foreign language instruction at junior high schools. (5) Make tentative proposals for enhancing junior high school foreign language instruction. |

Class overview | In the first 5 weeks of this course, we will familiarize ourselves with relevant research in instructed language learning. After that, students will study a specific methodology: CLIL. They will also observe a CLIL lesson at Fuzoku Elementary School. Next, students will study the Course of Study and Issues with foriegn language education at Iwate junior high schools. Lastly, as a final project, students will present about a research article relevant to their interests. | ||||
Class style | The class will have discussions, lectures, presentations, practice teaching, and observation. | ||||

There will be weekly reading and a written literature review as a final report. |
