Evaluation and can dos
Topic: Why do teachers do testing?
- To understand students’ abilities.
- To grade
- To improve teachers’ instruction
- To assess students’ abilities (diagnostic evaluation)
- To encourage students to study
Most teachers understand the reasons to test but most tend to make tests to find out if students understand what they learned in their class. Some teachers give tests using the text that they studied in class to see if they memorized it.
Teachers should plan tests before making them (think about what abilities they want students to develop). Teachers should make a list of what they want to measure.
Validity is most important. For example, on a reading test, teachers make questions and students write the answers. Sometimes, teachers will give points off for spelling even though students are fulfilling the ability they are being evaluated on.
