What are the differences between students who try to use standard English pronunciation and those who speak with a Japanese accent?

  • Potential differences: Background, motivation, identity

Questions to ask about background

  • How was your English class in your school days?
    • Did you have a lot of time to speak English?
    • Have you ever learned phonics?
  • Have you been to other countries?

Motivation

  • Do you want to improve your English skill?
  • Why do you learn English?
  • What do you want to do with English?

Identity

  • Do you feel weird when you hear a Japanese person speak native-like English?
  • Do you feel nervous when you speak English?
  • Do you aim to have standard English pronunciation or a Japanese accent?

Evaluation: seek the cooperation of Josie and Connor.

James’ advice: Use a likert scale. 5・4・3・2・1(Strongly agree → Strongly Disagree)

Background:

  • I had the opportunity to speak English in almost every class.
  • I have learned phonics.

Next time: Bring a completed questionnaire

Cindy

Questions to pursue:

  1. How did students’ grammar complexity, lexical complexity, fluency, and accuracy change over time.
  2. What is the relationship between task type and fluency, accuracy, etc.

He showed us his data and next time he will tell us how he will use the data to answer his questions. Cindy also showed us his outline. James advised him that he needs a literature review section. He should write about: 1) What are writing skills? 2) How have researchers investigating instruction to improve writing skills?
