Cultural Appropriation and Skeleton Story

Elementary school teachers are supposed to have a B1 level of English (About 英検2級). One of the qualifications of this level is to be able to talk about social issues as well as use language creatively. Therefore, we will practice this today.

Goal:

Read and understand a newspaper article. Consider the issue of cultural appropriation

Let’s think

What would you call this outfit?

The above picture was taken from Kim Kardashian’s twitter.

Let’s practice

Warm up with new words

Discuss!

After answering some comprehension questions, let’s choose which discussion questions from the worksheet we will want to consider.

More things to consider

Cultural appropriation is borrowing fashion, objects, or trends from other cultures because it makes us look good or seem cool.

When is cultural appropriation acceptable and when is is not acceptable? Let’s look at some examples and consider it.

  2. James will read out a story, act out the lines as he reads it. If you do not understand, imitate students who do!
  3. James will repeat the story at a faster pace.
  4. Everyone writes the story using first letters as hints. (See below)
  5. Tell the story in pairs.

  • I saw a box on the ground in front of me.
  • I picked it up.
  • I slowly opened the lid.
  • Aah! A bird flew out and hit me in the face!
  • I looked inside.
  • Wow! It was full of treasure!
  • I filled up my pockets as quickly as I could.
  • Oh no! Someone was coming!
  • I turned around and ran.
