Hall-Ken 2017 – 2019: The Vagabonds

Welcome Vagabonds!

We have two goals today.

  1. Discuss a big project I want you to help me with.
  2. Discuss our schedule.

1. Big Project

This semester, we will learn research by doing research!

I want to find out the following together about the ETM Monkeys.

  1. What is the nature of change in student-teachers’ Teaching Philosophy over the four ETM classes?
  2. To what extent does the EP design encourage student-teachers to reconcile their craft knowledge with their academic concepts?

My rationale for this is that truly professional teachers are able to synthesize their craft knowledge (knowledge of teaching) with their academic knowledge (subject matter knowledge) and contextual knowledge (knowledge of school and society) to teach effectively. ETM should encourage students to do this and I want to see if the ePortfolios can facilitate this process.

To answer these questions, we will code students’ philosophy and development in ETM 1, ETM 2, ETM 3, and their teaching practice. Coding consists of the following process:

  1. Attach a descriptive code to a segment of text using the words of the writer if possible.
  2. Put the descriptive codes into categories.
  3. Consider whether or not these categories fit under contextual, academic, or craft knowledge.
  4. Look at each student to understand their growth.
