Education of Finland

Shin-chan’s Rationale: Finland has a high score on PISA so he is interested in Finnish education. The English level of Finland is high. For example, the average TOEFL score is 96 out of 120. However, the Japanese score is 70. 92% of the people speak Finnish. 6 % of the people speak Swedish. The others speak their own language. English is a foreign language in Finland, like Japan. Therefore he wants to research Finnish English education, particularly elementary school.

In case of JHS just in English class, FIN 228 hours JP 350 hours

I thought that the number of people who dont like English will be getting increased because its so rapid changes.

Class size

20 students in the class. teachers help the students all the time. teachers take the students up to the higher level than Japanese one.

Quality of teachers

they have to get the master and its mandatory to go study in college

tuition fee is for free from ES to US

Most of college students have8-10 years to study in college.

Hama-chan: What is global citizenship?

Internationalization vs. Globalization: The latter puts emphasis on the earth as a whole not the connection between countries. The former is thought to encompass the relations between countries.

Global citizenship: Immigrants, religion, environment, ethnicity

  • What kind of international and global topics are there in the textbook?
  • Which do textbooks favor, internationalization or Globalization?
  • What kind of English speakers are shown in the textbook? Are they from the inner, outer, or expanding circle?

Inner circle vs. outer circle vs. expanding circle: The number of people in the expanding circle is greatest.

Suggestion: Content analysis on topic type.  Step one: Give a keyword to the topic; Step 2: Categorize as International or global

Next time: Tell me what will be the topics of your literature review?
