“Interaction” might be a better word than “communication.”
I think that “Small Talk” is a very good thing to research. It plays an important role in students’ language learning.
I think it will be VERY important to find many different 実践例 of small talk to be able to answer your research questions. It is also possible to interview teachers about how they do Small Talk.
