It was an important reminder for me that “university is supposed to develop character”.
Systematic student guidance is a topic that I was not familiar with. Of course, student guidance exists at Iwate University but it is up to each professor.
Here are some further observations:
高校までは学生指導の重要性がうたわれているのに対して、大学は専門的な知識を授けるだけの場所になってしまいがちであるのは、ある意味仕方のないことと思っていたので、わたしも「こんなことあったらよいな」と理想の学生指導を思い描きながら聞いていました。学生の意見の中でも教授への要望のようなもの(教員と学生の距離が近い)と、支援金といったような学生支援課が関わってくるような要望が見て取れたので、分けて考えるか、統合的に考えるかによっても、理想像のあり方が変わるのではないかと思いました。
This is just my personal opinion, but foreign language lectures are one of the few opportunities for communication in university life, and because this is held for first-year students, I thought this was a suitable venue for student guidance. I also thought that student guidance was necessary when students are unfamiliar with university life and feel anxious. However, I was surprised to find that this was not what the students wanted.
